Competition in the U.S. Chicken Sector

A study of the state the chicken industry by the National Chicken Council concludes that it is a "competitive and thriving sector" with "intense competition among chicken companies [that] leads to product innovation and lower prices for consumers." The chicken industry is largely vertically integrated, in which a single company owns all phases of the operation; 75% of "broiler" chicken farmers are satisfied with their decision to get into the industry.

Farming Fish for the Future

Global fish production grew by 1.3% from 2007 to approximately 159 million tons in 2008. Aquaculture accounts for nearly half of the fish produced worldwide and is projected to comprise half by the year 2012. Human consumption accounts for 77% of total fish production, while the remainder is used for non-food production and animal feed.

Cattle Ranching a Green Profession, Survey Finds

In this survey of beef consumers by the Beef Checkoff Program, cattle ranchers and farmers were selected as the third greenest profession from a list of jobs which included park rangers at the top of the list; 86% of Americans believe that cattle farmers and ranchers are committed to environmental preservation.

According to data from Information Resources, Inc., "regular" eggs produced in traditional cage housing systems continue to be the most popular type of eggs among Americans, who continue to buy them over cage-free eggs by a margin of 40 to 1.

As those of us at HRC mention regularly, the purpose of conducting research is often to overcome (or validate) our own assumptions and biased viewpoints. It can be difficult for advocates who feel strongly about animal protection to understand the attitudes and behavior of those who are less moved by the suffering of animals. To really know what non-advocates think - and why - it is essential to ask them directly and then filter their responses through rigorous analysis. You may be surprised by the answers and how different they can be from the beliefs of animal advocates.

These results from Wave 3 of the Humane Research Council's annual survey of U.S. adults regarding attitudes and behavior toward animals shows strong support for the protection of all animals, but knowledge of some animal issues remains low and the perceived impact of animal advocates is modest.
